"An important aspect of the cosmology of the Inland Tlingit, is the communication to ancestors and the forces of life. Traditionally this task is carried out by the medicine man, through a ritual called ‘dreaming’ where he communicates beyond the human realm and in doing so he is able to foresee the future. This, for centuries, has been the single most important method of storytelling for the Inland Tlingit, and therefore the nest for their imagination and the bond of their society. With the advent of radio, television, cinema, and the computer, the once single enunciator and powerful story teller—the medicine man has lost the attention of his people, which has been detrimental for the society and belief system. With this installation work, I’m proposing a 'medicine man technological leap': Can computer aided ‘dreaming’ be the new method for expressing the medicine man’s communication with the ancestors and the forces of life, and therefore again be able to share his knowledge of the future to the Inland Tlingit? As members of the Inland Tinglit people move to distant lands, can the dreaming be streamed via web and like the 'spider web' predicted by the medicine man, connect it's people again? |

Lucinations is generated from a journey of one medicine man who was asked to find a missing person in Teslin Yukon Canada. He used a fox as his spirit guide: while on this journey he noticed a spiritual darkness over his home land. The dark cloud was the change that came after the Alaska highway reached Teslin in the 1940s. I wanted to continue the interpretation from a medicine mans point of view. In this piece, through the medium of the Maya software I will play the role of a metaphorical prophet that sees the future, as a way to journey to the past and re-live the visions through the eyes of the medicine man of the 1800's. The textual part of the thesis is titled "Captured by the spider" (The spider's web is used as a metaphor of technology and its effectiveness to capture without notice). Teslin adapted to western technology since the early 20',starting with the radio From that time another discourse was present, changing the social behaviors in Teslin.
