Carly Jonsson next Winter 2011 index 156A The work I chose from the Getty is titled Dancer and was sculpted from bronze by an Italian artist named Paolo Troubetzkoy. The subject of the piece is the famous Russian pianist and dancer, Countess Tamara de Svirsky. When I first saw Dancer, I thought it moved, and as a result, I was struck my its excellent craftsmanship. Although in reality, the statue is stationary, any footsteps near the piece cause the entire statue to quiver slightly, because the dancer is only secured to the ground with a thin piece of metal representing her foot. I thought the movement was a nice addition to the piece, because a dancer is meant to be in motion. |
