colour organ

-----------------

Colour Organ is an installation of immersive light and sound that establishes a direct relationship between the light and sound spectrums. The term 'colour organ' refers to a long tradition of devices built to visually represent and/or accompany sound. In this interpretation of the colour organ, sound is dynamically generated according to the projected light in the installation space.

Colour Organ draws its inspiration from existing colored noise like white noise and explores this analogy of mapping the visual to the auditory further to discover the sound of color. White noise is so named because the spectrum of frequencies in white noise looks similar to the spectrum of light wave frequencies in white light when viewed on a spectrogram.

The light and sound projected in the space shift through the color spectrum so subtly that change is at the border of perception. After a short time, one begins to hear patterns, sounds, or music within the 'noise'. Certain spectra produce psychological or physiological responses of pain, pleasure, irritation, or hypnosis and even one's temporal experience seems effected.
