[BACK to Habitat]

N. Pickle is living at Asher House Los Angeles while going to school at UCLA. While it's residents attend a number of Los Angeles area schools, it is closest to UCLA andopperates by the University's schedule. It is one block away from the edge of campus and a few blocks from downtown Westwood.

It is religiously affiliated but not run by the church, but rather by aBoard of Directors for Asher Houses all over the country. Its residents areChristian Scientists and agree to certain House Rules while staying. These include no alcohol, drug, or non-marital sex while on the premises.

Becuase it is considered a co-op the residents must also take care of the kitchen and garden areas when needed. Otherwise, it is a usually quiet, close-knit communal living where common respect goes without saying. Everyone knows everyone else and is always there for support.

The house is divided into 3 houses - the front house and two 2-story back houses where people live. There is room enough for 20 residents, however the common number is 10-15. There are 12 rooms, half singles and half doubles. N. Pickle has a double all to himself, the room with a large bay window that faces the general walking path, where it is visible by anyone on the grounds (nicknamed "The Fishbowl"). But this isn't bothersome - his life is an open book. There is a large kitchen in the main house, along with a living room and dining area, laundry facilities, and the House Manager's room. Upstairs are an office, guest room, and lounge. The house is surrounded by gardens, which unfortunately was under renovation in 2001 and 2002, replaced with some lawns for the summer.
