The Murray Scholarships

Webster describes the word "scholar" as 1) a specialist in a particular branch of learning, 2) a student given scholarship aid, 3) any student or pupil. There are Rhodes Scholars, Fulbright Scholars, and now Murray Scholars. Murray Scholars? Who was Murray?

Jim Murray. He captured the hearts and minds of young and old alike with his literary genius. From the Class of '43 at Trinity College (Hartford, Conn.), to the New Haven (Conn.) Register, to the now extinct Herald Examiner in Los Angeles, to TIME, INC. as the Hollywood cinema correspondent, to being one of the founders of Sports Illustrated in 1954. Jim Murray was the Pulitzer Prize winning sports columnist for the Los Angeles Times for 37 years, and a14-time winner of the Sportswriter of the Year award. His outstanding work landed him a spot in the writers' wing in Cooperstown's Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988.

In 1999, I established The Jim Murray Memorial Foundation to perpetuate my late husband's memory and his love and dedication to his extraordinary career in journalism. The Murray Scholars are the recipients of the journalism scholarships provided by this non-profit 501 (c) 3, State of California organization.

To honor Jim Murray's memory six "Murray Scholars" will each receive a $5,000 scholarship this spring. Participating in this year's essay contest are the top 15 journalism schools in the nation, Murray's alma mater Trinity College, USC, UCLA and the schools attended by the Foundation Board members.

To qualify for a Murray scholarship, each student must be a second year college student who has been accepted as a junior in their university's journalism school. The Foundation will choose a topic for a 1,000 word essay, to be judged first by local judges, then State judges, with the finalists being decided by a group of national writers.

The Murray Scholars will be invited to attend the Jim Murray Memorial Golf Classic Awards presentation on Monday, August 21, 2000 at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake, California. Scholarship monies for the year 2000 were raised through the Inaugural Jim Murray Memorial Golf Classic held on the first anniversary of Jim's death, August 16, 1999.

The Jim Murray Memorial Foundation is also a recipient of an annual grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. The Los Angeles Times shared a portion of the proceeds from their recently published book "Jim Murray: The Great Ones." The number of scholarships for talented students will be determine by the success of all its fund raising events, grants and the newly developed Patrons program.

In celebration of the Ladies Professional Golf Association's 50th anniversary, the LPGA made a cash donation to the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation to honor Jim as the first recipient of the Babe Zaharias Journalism Award.
