DESCRIPTION

The idea for Stereosculptor is inspired by the predominant fascination of tree-dimensional imagery and its effect which makes people 'gaze deep into the scenes' being immersed by this illusionary effect. The discussion about the concepts of three-dimensional vision, optics and reception evoked my curiosity investigating the secrets behind this phenomenon.

Stereosculptor is an interactive installation piece, which turns images of motion into stereoscopic 3-dimensional sculptures.
A dual-camera system 'scans' its field of vision within a time delay and transforms the images of motion in space into spatial 'objects' projected onto a screen.
This decelerated scanning process causes a successive creation of the image and allows people to influence the objects’ shape by means of motion. Different from a photographic long time exposure where moving parts become ‘invisible’, every single part of the digital image shows a snapshot of recorded image composed into a motion painting. The 3-dimensional result produces a strange mixture of “real” and alienated imagery.

Stereosculptor develops the stereoscopic apparatus as a technique often used for reproduction of reality into a device of artistic interpretation of human gesture and motion.
It tries to translate motion in space into a 3-dimensional painting (sculpture) and also addresses questions about human perception of space.

Stereosculptor incorporates the following concepts:

The History of Locomotion, early examples of Etienne-Jules Marey, Edward Muybridge and Marcel Duchamps

Michael Saup: Binary Ballistic Ballet, Wylliam Forsythe

Blurring the edges of the real: Stereoscopic vision (anaglyphic), subtractive color system and realtime image processing
