ok, many of you do not know how to access your files
on the file server at school. This ability is really critical to learn.
That's why I compiled this tutorial. Enjoy |
first you must go to the support website: support.design.ucla.edu then go to the downloads section |
![]() |
then you must select the software platform you are
using (platform means what operating system you use, it most likely is
either windows or mac) |
![]() |
i will only be explaining the windows portion here. please click here for the mac tutorial now, download the appropriate program, there are three, open office (basically microsoft office, but made by a non-profit group so it's free), sophos anti virus (something you really should have on your computer, ucla bought it for every student, so you should take advantage of something you already paid for and use it!), and windows ssh/sftp client. what you want is windows ssh/sftp and download it to a place on your computer that you are familiar with and have access to. (basically know where the file is going to be downloaded to, you'd be surprised how often i accidentally put stuff and have to search the whole computer to find it again.) |
![]() |
now install the program.... i can wait... take your
time..... *whistle*......*looks around*..... ok, now that the program
is installed , there are two types on icons, the one that says: SECURE
FILE TRANSFER CLIENT (the one that looks like a folder). ok, click and
open it. a window (should) pop up, and there is a button called quick
connect, click it. |
![]() |
a window should pop up, asking you for the host name,
put users.design.ucla.edu and for your user name put
your using name that you use to log onto computers at the DMA labs. If
you do have never logged on at school or you have never set up an account,
or you've tried to use your user name and password several times and it
doesn't work and you are a design student or currently enrolled in a design
class, please click
here and fill out the info. |
![]() |
ok, you've entered all the host name and user name,
now press connect, it will ask for a password then. type in your password,
if you forgot your password, click
here |
![]() |
ok, you will be given a list of files in YOUR
directory, (that's basically if you go to my computer and access the drive
with your using name on it at the labs) but this is all your stuff here,
you are the only one who has access to this stuff, no one else does. (btw,
ignore the files i have on mine =D ). now you can drag and drop any files
you need into the window to upload, or you can drag and drop from the
program to your computer to download (or you can right click on the file
and choose download to also download) |
![]() |
ok, now to access the temp folder (the massive shared
storage we have on the server, where eveyrone has access to files, however,
no files are perminant and the folder is subject to deletion at any time,
hence the title: TEMP) this is a bit more tricky. the folder is located
in the /data/export directory, which means: / is root, or the beginning
of the file system, an you have to go back directories in order to get
to the data directory (confusing no? just follow wut i do) ok, to see
the root directory, go to view, and click SHOW ROOT DIRETORY |
![]() |
the / is the root directory, you are now here, click
on it to see all the subfolders inside the root directory, one of the
ones you need is called: DATA |
![]() |
now click on the DATA directory to access the EXPORT
directory (i really dunno why these directory are called these things) |
![]() |
You are now in the data folder, click the export button
to get access to the temp folder (IGNORE THE TEMP FOLDER IN THE DATA FOLDER,
IT IS NOT WHAT YOU WANT) |
![]() |
now click on the temp folder |
![]() |
in temp, there are copious amount of folders. one
in particular is the JAY SOFTWARE folder which contains
all the programs you need. |
![]() |
![]() |
one last note: click
here let's go see it!
