김다슬은 조각, 시, 퍼포먼스와 AR 중심의 뉴미디어를 작업의 주된 매체로 사용하여 인간생태계와 비인간 주체에 대한 연민 그리고 존재의 부조리함에 대해 얘기한다.
Dasul Kim is an artist based in Seoul and Los Angeles. She uses sculpture, poetry, performance, and augmented reality as the main medium of her work to talk about compassion for non-human entities, human ecology, and the absurdity of existence. Her works reflect her interest in the underlying ideologies that govern and shape human ecology through the relationship between the built environment and nature.
그는 뉴미디어, 텍스트, 퍼포먼스, 인터렉티브 설치 등을 중심으로 다양한 매체를 사용하여 개인적 차원으로 환원된 사회적 이슈를 보여준다. '우연성'은 중요한 작품의 표현수단으로 개인의 삶에서 발견된 즉흥적인 요소들을 엮어 작업을 일종의 블랙코미디로써 사회를 비판하고 개인의 허망함을 말하는 방식으로 사용한다.
Through her works, Dasul highlights the duality of capitalism as a monstrous detriment to this relationship between people and nature. The artist equips herself with multiple mediums, such as text, sound, performance, and installations to convincingly express her interests. For her practice, element of chance plays a pivotal role in interweaving seemingly irrelevant and spontaneous, yet intimate, elements found in an individual’s life with social discourses. This platform pays homage to the motley black comedy with its emotional absurdity that criticizes society with absurdity and silliness.
또한, 그의 작업은 급격히 가속화된 디지털 라이프 즉, '가상성'이 부각된 현실에 흥미를 가지고 '가상'이 어떻게 '물질'을 대체하는지 탐구한다. 이러한 맥락에서 '만질 수 있는 가상', '더 가까운 가상', '인간저인 가상' 또는 '따뜻한 가상'의 가능성에 대해 말한다. 그는 여전히 사적인 방식으로 몸, 정체성, 물질성 등의 문제를 가져와 결과적으로 확장된 조각의 관점에서 미디어 아트를 바라보며 물질과 비물질을 오가는 디지털 미학을 보여준다.
Recently, her works have begun to react to the consequences of our post-digital world, where our reality is being replaced with virtuality due to our rapidly accelerated digital life. The resulting potential of the ‘tangible virtual,’ the ‘closer virtual,’ the ‘humane virtual,’ and the ‘warm virtual’ reflect the human desire to make tangible our virtual world. This agenda opens up the potential of traditional media art into a new form of expanded sculpture.
김다슬은 이화여자대학교에서 조소와 미술사를 공부했으며 UCLA에서 미디어 아트 석사학위를 받았다.
She holds a BFA in Sculpture and Art History and an MFA in Sculpture from Ewha Womans University. She also holds an MFA in Design Media Arts from UCLA.
