Janie Kim next Winter 2011 index 156A This piece is a reinterpretation of Paul Cezanne's Still Life with Apples. The inspiration comes from the way that young children view paintings as flat and two-dimensional. Although Cezanne and many other painters give depth to their paintings and bring them to life with the use of shadows and perspective, most children are unable to grasp these concepts and simply understand them as dark and light, big and small. This allowed me to realize that children may view paintings in the way that I sometimes view abstract paintings: as merely shapes and colors. With that idea in mind, I decided to overlay my three-dimensional interpretation on top of the original painting. I recreated all of the objects in the same rough and globular manner with thick strokes. I also overlayed the same textures to toy with the integration of two and three dimensions. |
